Do You Know About World Spay Day?!

February 26, 2019

Tuesday February 26th, 2019 is World Spay Day, an international day to promote the spaying and neutering of companion animals. But is this awareness day necessary you ask? Well, let’s explain what this day is all about, why its important, and how you can get involved.

What is World Spay Day and why is it important?

All around the world dogs and cats are euthanized due to the lack of homes or more importantly due to over population. The most effective method to reduce euthanasia of these homeless pets is to spay or neuter companion animals.

The average female cat can give birth to a litter of about six kittens five times per year. That means about 30 kittens per year born to just one mama cat. This example may sound extreme, but I just take a look at your Facebook or local shelter listings. There is a constant stream of animals needing homes and not enough space to go around.

How can I get involved?

This number one way to help is by spaying or neutering you pets but there are plenty of other ways to help too even if your own pets are already spayed or neutered.

Volunteer at your local shelter, they may ask you to walk the dogs play with the cats or even help assist with the adoption process. Don’t have as much time to devote to volunteering outside of the house, well don’t worry you can still help by fostering pets. Fostering is one of my favorite ways to give back, not only are you providing a home for a homeless pet, but you also get the cuddles of that pet too.
